The main project objective is to put the groundwork for the deployment of case-level RFID and the internet of things as a standard in the fresh product supply chain.

  • Strategic objectives: RFID technology deployment in the fresh product supply chain will reach the roll-out level, by increasing the number of items monitored and of manufacturers and retail stores examined, establishing a win-to-win strategy between manufacturer and retailer.
  • Operational objectives: RFID Logistics Pilot III aims to evaluate and improve the efficiency and productivity of RFID-enabled supply chain processes, as well as to measure the impact of out-of-stock, Remarque, and inventory cost at the retail store

Main features

Officially started in October 2012, the project stems from the two previous projects carried out by the RFID Lab researchers, such as the RLP I project, the first Italian example of pilot study in the field of fast moving consumer goods supply chain, and the RLP II project, which focused specifically on measuring the impact of RFID on out-of-stock, demarque and inventory at retail store.

RFID Logistics Pilot III will be carried out following the innovative approach proposed in the RPL I and II. Specifically, 5 companies will participate actively to the project, although only some of them will be directly involved in providing the locations for piloting. Nonetheless, all participants will be involved in project engineering, both from the technical and operational points of view, in the experimental campaigns, and will share the resulting know-how. The pilot project will involve 5 sites, namely two distribution centers and three retail stores.

The phases

RFID Lab of the University of Parma is in charge for the scientific coordination of the project, partnering with Universities and research centers adhering to the Global RF Lab Alliance (GRFLA) and with RFID & VIS Labs, an interdepartmental center of University of Parma, belonging to the Emilia Romagna “High Technology Network”.
